About the Model Congress Program

Westfield State Model Congress offers high school students an immersive, hands-on experience in the legislative process of the U.S. Congress. With participation from over a dozen public and private schools across Western Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut, the program brings the excitement and complexity of lawmaking to life.

The Model Congress Experience

How It Works

Hosted in the newly renovated Parenzo Hall, students prepare and submit bills on topics of their choice, such as environmental policy and public education freedoms. During the event, participants debate proposals, amend bills in committees, and engage in plenary sessions that mirror the real-life workings of U.S. Congress.

Community and Support

The success of Model Congress is a team effort, supported by Political Science Department faculty and Westfield State students, who serve as committee chairs and presiding officers. This collaboration offers high school students an invaluable learning experience while building meaningful connections between the University and local communities. By hosting a simulation that trains our future leaders on democratic governance, the University demonstrates its commitment to civic engagement and experiential learning.

Two-day Spring Conference

Westfield State Model Congress features a two-day conference every spring, offering students opportunities to deepen their understanding of democracy and the legislative process. This program allows high school students to explore the principles of governance, engage with their peers, and embrace the values of democracy. Join us in shaping the next generation of civic leaders!

Political Science Department at Westfield State

Beyond Model Congress, Westfield State’s political science program offers a range of enriching experiences, including internships, Model United Nations, and accelerated degree pathways like the 3+3 law program and the Early Entry MPA program. These initiatives prepare students for impactful careers in politics, government, and beyond.
