General Education and Transfer Students

All students at Westfield State will complete a common set of learning experiences, but we recognize that students who transfer credits into WSU bring with them many different rich experiences. Depending on the type and number of credits you bring with you, there are slightly different general education requirements, so we can support degree completion in a timely manner.

Some college courses taken at other institutions that meet WSU’s standards for transfer may be applied to general education requirements after undergoing review. This would include AP Credits and Dual-Enrollment Credits. However, for the purposes of this policy, 'Transfer Students' are college students who complete any transferable coursework from an accredited college after successful completion of the high school diploma. So although credits earned during high school may be accepted and count toward a WSU degree, and may satisfy a general education requirement, determination of general education requirement completion is based on college credits completed after high school.

When it comes to determining general education requirements, there are five broad types of 'transfer students'

  1. Students who transfer in 29 or fewer credits. These students will complete all regular general education requirements.
  2. Students who have completed MassTransfer General Education Foundation Block or STEM block, with or without an Associate’s degree should see below for general WSU’s education requirements.
  3. Students who transfer in 60 or more credits (non-MassTransfer students) should see below for general WSU’s education requirements.
  4. Students who have completed 30-59 credits (non-MassTransfer students) should see below for general WSU’s education requirements. .
  5. Students enrolled in the Second Bachelor’s program through continuing education who have completed a Bachelor’s degree at an accredited college will have all outstanding WSU General Education requirements waived.

Note that all students are required to complete the University Wide Requirements 'Integrative Experience' and 'Exploring Writing in the Major,' which are completed within the major and are university requirements.
