SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Teacher’s Endorsement Courses

Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement through Westfield State University

Westfield State University offers SEI Endorsement 2-3 times a year.

1. Stand Alone SEI Endorsement

Stand Alone Sheltered English Immersion

Westfield State University has been approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer endorsement for the full Sheltered English Immersion course.

Fall 2021 - September 2 - December 10, 2021

Registration begins July 6, 2021

3 graduate credits  - EDUC 0595-501 (CRN 13461)      Stand Alone SEI                Thursday; 4:30-6:55 p.m.
*Please note that students with an on-campus presence must be vaccinated. Please contact noncredit@westfield.ma.edu for more information.     

Individuals may take this course in the following two ways:
1.  3-Graduate Credits - (EDUC 0595) Cost: $1,116 - Please call our office at 413-572-8020 with registration assistance
2. 45 PDPs  - (PDP 0595) - Cost: $500 - Click here to register for PDP offering
*The course for PDPs meet the same dates and times as the course for 3-graduate credits.

Registration Information

Requirements for Successful Completion for the Stand Alone SEI Course

For those enrolled in the course for graduate credit, successful completion includes the following:

· Completion of all assignments, activities and projects
· Completion of the inquiry research paper assignment
· SEI mini lesson plan and presentation
· Completion of the SEI Capstone project
· A minimum of 10 hours with a second language student
· B or better as a final grade in the course
· Adherence to the attendance and participation policy

For those enrolled in the course for PDP, successful completion includes the following:
· Completion of all assignments, activities and projects
· SEI mini lesson plan and presentation
· Completion of the SEI Capstone project
· A minimum of 10 hours with a second language student
· B or better as a final grade in the course
· Adherence to the attendance and participation policy

Attendance and Participation Policy
Because the course format depends heavily on class participation and student interaction, it is crucial that participants arrive on time and be prepared to discuss assigned course readings/materials, and contribute to whole/small group discussions. Participants should complete all assignments by the specific due dates

Attendance to all class sessions is required. If, however, a participant misses a session, it is his/her responsibility to work with the course instructor to arrange for making up the missing class.

The SEI endorsement will be conferred upon successful completion of the course for those enrolled in EDUC 595: Stand Alone SEI Course.

Pre-requisites for PDPs
Individuals interested enrolling in PDPs must have permission from the instructor. Please email Dr. Wilma Ortiz at fortiz@westfield.ma.edu with answers to the following questions:
1. What is your current licensure status?
2. What is your current professional responsibility?
3. Do you have access to ELL students in your classroom? If not, do you have access in the building for the required 10 hours of instructional time?

District Endorsed Sheltered English Immersion Graduate Credit

Westfield State University is no longer accepting registrations for Graduate Credit for Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) sponsored courses through districts as of June 2017. If you have already submitted for credit and are looking for a transcript, please follow the directions below.

Grades & Transcript Requests:

Grades will be made available to students once Westfield State University receives an official grade.  However, documentation from your district or instructor may be required.

Students may request a transcript at any time, however please note your transcript may not be available until 1 week after grades have been reported to the University.

  • Students must receive a grade of B- (80.0%) or better in order to receive graduate credit from Westfield State University.
  • Pass/fail is not an option for this course.
  • To request a transcript, please fill out this form. Transcripts cost $2 for normal processing (2 – 4 business days), or $5 for 24-hour processing (if available). Checks and money orders are payable to Westfield State University.
  • The address to mail your request and payment is listed on the transcript request form under "Continuing Education/Graduate Students."
