  • Headshot of Cathy McKenzie.

    Cathy McKenzie

Hi, I am Cathy, the Math Tutoring Center Coordinator. I am also one of the tutors here at the MTC! I have held this position since January of 2022 and I love my job. To help students, in a variety of math courses, feel more accomplished and confident in their math skills is so rewarding to me, and I hope for the students as well. I grew up in Westfield and attended Westfield public schools. I earned a math/education degree at Western New England University and spent the majority of my career as a high school classroom math educator. At this tail end of my career I could not have imagined a better way to utilize my skills at helping students understand mathematics. Outside of work, I enjoy being a wife, mother and grandmother! I like to take walks with my family, dog or with friends. I love vacationing by the water, whether it be a lake or the ocean. I encourage you to use the Math Tutoring Center when you need us! We can’t wait to meet you and to help you with your math classes!

    Sophia Moccio

Hello! I’m a 4th year math and economics double major with a concentration in actuarial science. This is my third semester working in the Math Tutoring Center and I love helping people understand math and become more confident in their work. My favorite things to help with are algebra and calculus but I can still manage to help with statistics. Outside of tutoring, I am president of the Math Club and I work part time as a pharmacy technician, so I love to keep busy. Frequently Asked Questions

If I am taking a course outside of the math department that involves math, can I get help at The Math Tutoring Center?

The Math Tutoring Center was developed and intended for students taking MATH courses at Westfield State. We work in conjunction with the mathematics professors and supporting those students is our primary purpose. We are always here for a quick math question, but for tutoring sessions in other disciplines students should reach out to the Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) to be connected to a tutor with expertise in the appropriate course.

How long is a tutoring session at the Math Tutoring Center?

Because The Math Tutoring Center (MTC) is a drop-in tutoring center there is no need for a scheduled appointment. Therefore, you can stop by with a quick question and get the help you need in 10 minutes or so. Or, if you want to work on your whole homework assignment at the MTC, you may plan to work for a couple hours (or more) and ask for help if you run into a problem you struggle with. It is up to you!

Math is intimidating to me, is the Math Tutoring Center a good place for me to come?

The Math Tutoring Center is designed to calm your anxieties around math. We have strived to make the space comfortable and welcoming. We have comfortable chairs and tables, warm beverages and a candy jar if you need a little extra energy. The tutors will do our best to meet you at your level of math background when providing help as you work on your assignments.

Will I do well in my MATH course if I come to the Math Tutoring Center?

We want to help everyone be successful in their math courses. It might be challenging and require hard work, but with dedication, consistency, communication with your professors, and the support of math tutors who are here to help you as much as you will allow us to, you will have every opportunity to be successful in your math course! Just give us that chance to help. There are no guarantees, but visiting the Math Tutoring Center can help.
