Miss Stoldt

Hello everyone! I am so excited to begin this school year, I am the classroom special education teacher and this is my first year teaching! I am a recent graduate from Westfield State University, class of 2017. When I am not at school I like to spend time enjoying the outdoors, running, hiking, and spending time with my family.

Miss O’Neil

Unit Topic or Theme: Counting Money

Grade: 3

Lesson Topic or Theme: Counting money

Lesson Objectives:

  • Students will be able to correctly complete at least three problems in the game “Cash Out” during the 15 minutes allotted at the beginning of the lesson.

  • Students will be able to correctly identify the monetary amounts with 90% accuracy on the worksheet of coins given.

Instructional Technique: Online activity, experimentation, and group work.

Instructional Materials:

  • Computers

  • Website: http://mrnussbaum.com/cashd/

  • Instructional handout (How to Get to “Cash Out”)

  • Worksheets ( “Game Tracking” and “Counting Coins” worksheet)

  • pens/pencils

  • Scratch paper (enough for students to use while doing activities if they choose as well as enough for exit tickets)

Theoretical Perspective: This information is important for our students to learn because they will need to have the ability to count money as well as make change.

Procedure: (As a teacher, what will you and the students do.)

A. Introductory Activity 15 minutes

Students will play the online game “Cash Out” as an introductory activity. First, the teacher will explain the outline of the lesson and that after he/she has finished explaining the outline of the lesson, that students will carefully retrieve computers from the cart one table group at a time as the teacher calls on them. The teacher will instruct that once the students have the computers at their desk, they may begin logging in. While the students are doing this, the teacher should pass out the handouts that provide instructions for reaching the website. The teacher should also pass out the “game tracking” worksheet as well as the “Counting Coins” worksheet. Once students are at the website, they should play on the easy level for at least five minutes. If after five minutes have passed, the game feels too easy, they may move to the medium level. While playing “Cash Out” students should fill out the “game tracking” worksheet for at least 3 of the problems from the game.

B. Step-by-step 20 minutes

After having played the “Cash Out” game and filled out the “game tracking” Students will work with a partner at their table group to complete the “Counting Coins” worksheet. Each student should turn in their own copy of the worksheet at the conclusion of the lesson.

Count Money Activity

C. Closure 10 minutes

At the conclusion of the lesson students will complete an exit ticket. On a blank note card, students should write their name, the date, and “Change Practice”. For the exit ticket students will be asked to write and solve their own “change” word problem.

D. Homework None
