Tour Our Classroom!

This is our classroom! It is Circus themed. I made this the theme of our classroom because I believe it would help students to look at school as a fun place to learn. There are 5 tables in our classroom with 4 students at each. In the front of the room is the whiteboard and calendar area. Let's take a look around our classroom!

This is our calendar space where we have Morning Meeting. Morning Meeting is when we do the calendar, the weather, the day of the week, and the school day. Every day students come up for each part of morning meeting. If it is someone's birthday they are allowed to do every piece of morning meeting or ask friends to help them. Students are chosen to do calendar with the job cards. Everyday two students are chosen to do Morning Meeting. First we do the date, a student puts up the number for us. Next is the day of a week, a student tells us what today is, what yesterday was, and what tomorrow will be. Next is the weather, we tell the condition outside and the temperature. Finally, is the school day. We count what school day we are on and put a straw in that cup then write the number above.

These are our job cards. Everyday new students are randomly chosen for a job. Some jobs require more than one student. Our jobs include:
  • Clip Charts: At the end of the day the students that are assigned this job help me clip together the behavior charts. I have a system to report students behavior to their parents (explained later on this page). Once I have filed out the charts, one student puts them in everyone's mailboxes and the other student clips them to the papers with paper clips.
  • Center Organizer: Before it is time for centers, these two students go around to each center to check how they look. They make sure everything is in its place and nothing is broken or damaged. After centers, the same two students go around and check centers again. If something is not in its place or something is broken it is their job to report it.
  • Tech Squad: Before students go to lunch I chose a game on the Interactive Whiteboard for the students to play. The student who is assigned this job helps me run the game. They chose which students participate and they manipulate the game based on what their fellow classmates say.
  • Janitor: These students help make sure the classroom stays clean throughout the day. They also help clean the tables before snack time and after.
  • Teacher's Assistant: This student helps with any small tasks I need assistance with throughout the day. These sometimes include taking things to the office or other classrooms, putting papers in the mailboxes, and collecting finished papers.
  • Librarian: These students pick the stories that are read throughout the day. Later in the year, when students' reading skills develop these students have the option to read a story to the class together.
  • Pencil Patrol: These students have the job of making sure pencils are sharpened and that every student has a pencil. When we are going to do a worksheet, these students pass pencils out to the class.
  • Lights and Doors: This student's job is to shut the lights off and turn them on when needed. They also shut the door and open it when needed.

These are the students behavior buckets. Each student has their own bucket. At the beginning of the day all the students start with 10 Pom-Poms. Throughout the day if the students need to be spoken to a Pom-Pom is taken from their bucket. Once it is center time if the students have all 10 they can go to centers, if they have have less than between 4-8 they need to sit for 5 minutes before going to centers, if students have less than 4 they loose their center time all together. Students do have the chance to earn back their Pom-Poms. If students show they can behave the right way they can earn 1 Pom-Pom each hour if they continue that behavior. At the end of the day I send home charts with buckets drawn on them. I write the amount of Pom-Poms the student had at the end of the day and whether they lost any; if they did I write what happened for them to lose them.

Our Math Wall is located on the back wall of the classroom. This wall includes shapes, coins, and counting. The wall is updated throughout the year to focus on what we are learning in math at that time. Students use the Math Wall as a reference for worksheets if they are struggling. It also allows anyone who walks into the room to see what we are working on in math.

This is our Writing Center. Throughout the year it changes, but by the end of the year these are all the options it has. At the start of the year the students have the option to write a List or a Card. As the year progresses and their writing skills increase more options are added. The students are able to write a Story, then a Book, and finally a Letter. Sometimes I require the students to write about specific topics, but usually they are free to chose what they like.
