*Lesson Topic or Theme: Tornadoes

*Lesson Objectives: The student will be able to answer questions about basic tornado knowledge.

*Instructional Technique: group work activity, computer work, worksheets, quiz sheet

*Instructional Materials: weatherwizkids.com, nationalgeographic.com, weatherwiz worksheet, national geographic worksheet, teacher-provided materials for tornado in a bottle, draw a tornado worksheet, final evaluation quiz

*Theoretical Perspective: It is important for students to learn about different types of weather. Knowing how this dangerous weather event is formed can help students see warning signs and stay safe.

*Procedure:

1) Teacher will explain that the students will use the bookmarked websites on the computers to learn about tornadoes. Teacher will clarify that students are to go to weatherwizkids.com first and answer the questions that go with the site on the corresponding worksheet, and then they are to go to nationalgeographic.com and answer the questions on that corresponding worksheet.

2) Students will read and answer questions on both sites.

3) The last question on the national geographic sheet involves the tornado simulator on the site. Students will predict and record their simulator outcomes.

4) Teacher will provide small groups of 4 or 5 with the necessary materials and an instruction sheet for making a tornado in a bottle. Students in small groups will follow the instruction sheet to complete the activity.

5) Teacher will hand out an instruction sheet for drawing your own tornado.

6) Students will follow the instruction sheet and draw their own tornado.

7) The class will come together again and have a discussion about tornadoes and about the parts of tornadoes.

*This should be where students are able to ask questions and share their opinions on tornadoes.

*Have the kids go around and share one neat thing that hey have learned about tornadoes.

8) Teacher will hand out a final evaluation quiz for students to complete individually.

9) Students will complete quiz individually.

 

*Evaluation:

“The student will be able to answer questions about basic tornado knowledge” if the students answer 7 of 10 questions correctly on the final quiz, the objective has been met.
