Lesson Topic or Theme: Shopping at a store
Lesson Objectives: When given cash for a product that requires change, the students will be able to give correct change / cash back. The students will be able to Put the larger number on top and smaller number on the bottom line the decimals and subtract with borrowing
Instructional Technique: Demonstration on a whiteboard.
Instructional Materials: students will do a math work sheet to calculate the correct change. I will look at the work sheet to make sure they did the math correctly.
The game they will play when they pass the test will be this link: https://mrnussbaum.com/cash-out-online-game
Theoretical Perspective: If kids develop good financial skills from an early age, they'll be ready for the financial challenges of adulthood. Giving students a good foundation and teaching them about money is good for their personal development. Teaching students the basics can help them ill establish good money habits for life.
Procedure:I will stand in front of the class and demonstrate solving my word problem. I will ask the students to help me to check for knowledge.
I will demonstrate first with my own example word problem written on a big whiteboard.
Ex: A monkey wants to buy your banana; the monkey gives you one dollar. The banana costs 52 cents, how much change do you owe the monkey?
The first skill I will demonstrate is writing the larger number on the top of the smaller number.
Then I will demonstrate lining up the decimal point. I will ask the students to help me come up with four more items to sell and demonstrate four more problems.
Then I would have the students practice five more pre-written word problems on a work sheet with guidance when needed.
Lastly, I would test them with 5 more word problems. Once they get those five correct then they can play the online game.
If they fail the test, then I will go back to guided practice
Adaptations for different learners (i.e. non-native speakers, struggling readers or math phobic learners, students with poor study skills)
There is a Spanish version of the game https://mrnussbaum.com/cash-out-online-game-spanish-version-dame-mi-cambio
I will also provide extra guided practice after test.
Evaluation:
A. How/ when will you determine if you have met your objectives?
Students will be able to put the large number over the smaller number ,
They will be able to line up the decimals
And they will be able to Subtract with borrowing
I will determine if I have met my objectives for the lesson at the end when the students turn in the five test word problems. My objective is for them to get 100% correct of 5 problems.
B. Concerns or questions you have about teaching this lesson?
If the student comes in without the prerequisite skills of subtracting.
