Unit Topic or Theme: Math Grade: 1 Lesson Topic or Theme: Learning, counting, and matching coins Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to match an image of the coin to the corresponding value. The students will be able to match an image of the coin to the corresponding name. Instructional Technique: Lecture/ showing “Learn”, from website, as a whole class, independent work on tablet of dragging coins while filling out “Today’s Objective: Learning Coins” worksheet, independent “Matching Coins Activity” worksheet Instructional Materials: Tablets, website/ app (abcya.com), pencils, handouts (“Today’s Objective: Learning Coins” and “Matching Coins Activity”, 4 colored pencils Theoretical Perspective: Knowing the difference between the different types of coins will be vitally important for the rest of their lives to be able to get out the right coins when paying for something. It is also necessary to learn the values of all these coins to be able to use them to pay for the things you are buying. Money is used everywhere and all the time in the real world and is important to be understood at a young age. Procedure: A. Before the class begins the teacher will open the website on all the tablets and leave them on the students’ desk, but keep them off until students are directed to turn them on. The teacher will start the lesson with a clickable video from the website on the board, to show the whole class. Before each topic / coin the teacher will ask “does anyone know how much this is worth?” Going off of that the teacher will gage the speed of clicking through the information until the presentation is done. B. After the introductory activity the teacher will already have the next step “sort” on the board following the video. The teacher will demonstrate dragging one coin in the correct Treasure Chest pointing out the coin flipping into the chest. Then the teacher will demonstrate putting a coin in the wrong treasure chest and point out how the coin gets sent back to the pile about the chest. The teacher will then explain that a paper will be handed out for the students to tally how many times each coin gets sent back while you were sorting. The teacher will also point out the orange hint button at the top of the screen and ask students to record how many times they use a hint on the paper. The teacher will then hand out the “Today's Objective: Learning Coins” worksheet and ask students to take a moment to fill out their name, the date, and the “learn” section answering how beneficial the video was to their learning / if they enjoyed that type of teaching. After filling out the “learn” section students will open the tablet, already on the game, and sort coins. Students will record if they used hints or not and if so how many. Students will also record through tally marks how many times each coin got sent back when getting it wrong. Once students finish sorting all the coins on the screen and record their progress doing so, they will hand in their “Today’s Objective: Learning Coins” worksheet to the teacher. The teacher will then collect the tablet and hand out the next worksheet “Matching Coins Activity” and four colored pencils to students. Students will use a different colored pencil to draw the lines connecting the image of the coin to the corresponding value and with the same color to the corresponding name. For each coin in value and name on the page students should be using a different colored pencil to draw the lines. After students have completed the worksheet they will hand it in to the teacher. After receiving both worksheets from each student, the teacher will assess which coins students are struggling with and build/ modified tomorrow's class based on the results. C. In closing, the teacher will show a picture on the board of the coin and have a class discussion about what is the corresponding name and value. E. This lesson plan does not include homework. I think first grade is too young to be sending home homework. Evaluation: A. The students will be able to match an image of the coin to the corresponding value: This will be evident through the students being able to correctly match all the images of the coins to the corresponding value through the game on the website and on the handout “Matching Coin Activity”. The students will be able to match an image of the coin to the corresponding name: This will be evident through the students being able to correctly match all the images of the coins to the corresponding name on the handout “Matching Coin Activity”. B. One concern I have is if students are unhonest with how many times they struggle with a coin. If students are too embarrassed or even just forget to mark it down, it will skew the result of what the teacher should plan in the next lesson. Another concern is I have no idea how long students will take to complete the online activity or the worksheet after. I do not have anything else planned after these activities, so I hope it takes all or most of the class time we have so my students are not left bored. |
