Theoretical Perspective: This is a very important skill for students to learn because counting coins and knowing the values of them is an essential part of their lives. As students begin to grow and become older they are going to encounter situations that require them to use counting coins. Whether they are in the workplace or shopping, it is a necessity to know how much money you are giving to the cashier and vice versa, you as the cashier giving money to the costumer.

Procedure:

  1. Introductive Activity: The teacher will review the material from the class before, which was knowing the individual value of the coins. The teacher will also have the students identify various differences and similarities between each coin in order to engage interest. Differences such as the dime, doesn't have its value on it, and on the penny, Abraham Lincoln is facing the opposite direction in comparison to the other coins.

  2. Step By Step:

Step One: Have students log on to the class website and click the link, learning coins, www.abcya.com/learning-coins.htm

Step Two: Students will click play and then click the button “sort”

Step Three: Students will see a variety of coins displayed on the screen. Students will sort the coins in groups based on the type of coin, before dragging them into the chest.

Step Four: Students will fill out the chart on the worksheet with how many coins they have of each and the value of those counts

Step Four: Students will click “make a dollar” and fill out the chart on the worksheet

Step Five: Students will click try again after successfully making a dollar once and will continue to make a dollar using the what the worksheet shows.

Step Six: Students will put away their computer

Step Seven: Students will get with a partner and start worksheet two

Step Eight: Students will glue as many coins as they want to make the right amount.

Step Nine: Teacher will have a class discussion about the students answers

  1. Closure: After the students have completed the second worksheet, the teacher will start a class discussion about the student’s answers for the worksheet. The teacher will have the students share what coins they used and the different options they could have used. The teacher will address any concerns or questions the students had or the teacher noticed when reviewing.

  2. Adaptations for different learners: The teacher will have an aid available for any students that are struggling with any of the activities that are given.

  3. Homework: none

Evaluation:

  1. Objectives:

    • Students will be able to visually identify each US coin (quarter, dime, nickels, pennies). The teacher will determine if the students have met this objective by looking at the first handout to see if the student successfully sorted each coin. The teacher will also observe the students’ answers during the group discussion to measure their understanding.

    • Students will be able to identify the value of each coin highlighted in the lesson. The teacher will determine if the students have met this objective by looking over both worksheets, specifically the first worksheet where they were asked to identify the value of each coin. The teacher will also observe the students’ answers during the group discussion to measure their understanding.

    • Students will be able to utilize at least five different ways to add coins to equal a value of one dollar and other specified amounts. The teacher will determine if the students have met this objective by looking at both worksheets and checking to see if it is correct. If the answer(s) is/are not correct then the teacher will see how many time it took for them to find the correct amount of coins.
