Unit
Topic or Theme: Spelling
Grade:
Kindergarten
Lesson
Topic or Theme:
Spelling words with lowercase letters.
Lesson
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to recognize
lowercase letters in the alphabet.
2. Students will be able to use them in
short words.
3. Students will be able to sound out the
letters and short words.
4. Students will be able to write lowercase
letters and short words.
5. Students will be able to work with
guided internet sources for additional help learning.
Instructional
Technique:
Individual work
Instructional
Materials:
- Puppy Letters PBS Kids website online (http://pbskids.org/clifford/games/index_puppyletters.html )
- Computers
- Handout
- Headphones
- Pencil
Theoretical
Perspective: This
information is important for the students to learn because
it helps with letter recognition, sounding out words, and
spelling.
Procedure:
A. In
order to introduce this subject to the students, they will
be completing a tracing worksheet the night before using the
lowercase alphabet
B. Step-by-step
1. Students will be asked to complete an
alphabet lowercase tracing worksheet the night before
2. Each student will be given a computer
and a pair of headphones
3. During the day of the lesson, students
will be asked to sign into the computer and to click on the
Internet explorer “Puppy Letters” icon or the bookmark.
4. The teacher will demonstrate how to find
the icon or bookmark by using the projector at the front of
the class.
5. Students will start out by clicking on
level “Easy”
6. When the first word shows up, students
can click on Emily Elizabeth, in the left hand corner of the
activity, for her to read the word aloud to them
7. Next students will drag the letters from
the alphabet shown, for each word to the correct spot until
the word is complete
8.After the complete each would they will
then find that word on their worksheet and then trace it
9.They will then continue this process with
the rest of the 20 words
10.If students would like they can then try
the activity in the “Hard” level
C. In order to close out this
subject to student, they will end the activity with tracing
the words from the Puppy Letters online activity in
lowercase letters.
D. There
are no adaptations for different learners, but in this
activity students will work individually and be able to
complete the activity at their own pace. This will help any
students who don’t learn at the same pace as other students,
or have difficulty with letters, words, or writing, be able
to complete the activity without stress of falling behind.
E. There will be no homework
following this activity, because we feel that the worksheet
that was completed during the activity covered the material
for this lesson
Evaluation:
A.
Students will be able to recognize
lowercase letters in the alphabet.
-Once both worksheets are
complete students will have had much experience recognizing
and writing lowercase letters
Students will be able to use them in short
words.
-Once Emily Elizabeth
pronounces each word and students drag the letters to spell
out each of the small words, they will start to recognize
how a small amount of letters can be combine to spell out
simple words.
Students will be able to sound out the
letters and short words.
-when the student is able to
sound out each letter of the simple words on their own, the
teacher will then know that the student is able to sound out
each letter
Students will be able to write lowercase
letters and short words.
-After completion of this
activity students will hand in their completed worksheets,
to be checked by the teacher for completion.
Students will be able to work with guided
internet sources for additional help learning.
- The teacher will be able to
know that students are able to efficiently use the internet
sources if they are able to get to the website successfully
on their own without help.
B.
Students
may get distracted by being on the computer and forget to
stay on task, hopefully the handouts will be able to guide
the students to stay on task.
1. The objectives are written
in behavioral and measurable terms.
1 2 3 4 5 6
The activity asks the students to independently use a
computer activity to work on letter recognition and spelling
without the input of the teacher to complete it. The teacher will
be able to measure the effectiveness of this activity and
how much the students know by collecting and grading the
handout that accompanies the activity.
2. The objectives match the
learning opportunities provided in the lesson.
1 2 3 4 5 6
The objectives match the learning opportunities
provided in the lesson by allowing the students to use the
internet activity to practice lowercase letter recognition
and use these letters in short words. The activity also
helps students to sound out these letters to form words by
hearing it said to them and then reading it on their own. The students are
given a handout to complete as they go through the internet
activity which helps reinforce their skills in writing. This activity will
also strengthen their abilities to work with computers and
while having the help of a teacher there if necessary.
3. Student assessment is directly linked to
the stated objectives.

highlight the corresponding assessment.

4. The instructional sequence is detailed
enough for a substitute

teacher
to follow.
The
instructional sequence is detailed enough for a substitute
teacher to follow because the homework will have already be
given, the website is bookmarked and is saved as an icon on
the desktop of the computer so it will be easy to access,
and the worksheets for during the activity will only need to
be passed out.
5. The technology-based tools (web based,
software, hardware)
1 2 3 4 5 6
contribute
to student learning in ways that could not be easily
duplicated without their use.
* As part of your response please describe
some of the dynamic qualities of the tool utilized.
The major portion of this lesson utilizes the online
website. Without this online portion this lesson would be
primarily worksheet based and less interactive. This
interactive website is very helpful for students learning.
The website includes a picture of the word, uses it in a
sentence, and will read the sentence aloud to you. Depending
on the level, the word could even be written out in the
background for you to drag the correct letters on top of.
This website is very colorful and child friendly. The way
this lesson is set up would be impossible to do without the
use of technology.
6. The lesson is unique and engaging.
1 2 3 4 5 6
* As part of your response please highlight
what you feel is most creative about your lesson.
This lesson is unique in the
way that it involves both an online interactive portion and
a written hands-on portion. Not only are the students
learning the sounds of the letters and how they make up
words, but also students are learning how to trace these
letters on the worksheet following this activity. This is
important in order to actually know how to physically write
these words. The online portion of this website makes it
more engaging and fun for the students. Not only are there
colorful pictures and animations, it is characters they know
and love, such as Clifford and Emily Elizabeth.
