Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan: Week 1 - Writing

Unit Topic or Theme: Matching

Grade: Kindergarten

Lesson Topic or Theme:

Differentiate between opposites while working on writing skills.

Lesson Objectives:

TSWBAT identify the opposite of words by pictures and be able to successfully trace words that correspond with that picture.

Instructional Technique:

Whole group activity, computer activity, and  worksheets

Instructional Materials:

Opposites worksheet for in class and homework

Theoretical Perspective:

It is important for students to learn opposites of words because it helps them understand the concept of comparing two items. These words will also help them later on in language development as descriptive words.

Procedure:

A. Introductory Activity:

Everyone stands up and the teacher will call out opposites i.e.:

“Stand up! Sit Down!”

“Look to the left! Look to the right!”

“Happy! Sad!”

“Reach to the sky! Touch the ground!”

This would introduce the idea of opposites and get the students thinking about the concept before indulging in the activity.

B. Step-by-step:

  1. Go to computer lab in room 238

  2. Seat students at the first twenty computers

  3. Hand out worksheet with word tracing and pencils to students

  4. Explain to the students: “These words on the piece of paper go along with the words you hear on the computer. Find the picture to match and trace that word next to it. Once you finished tracing all of the words, make a line to connect the opposite words together.”

  5. On the desktop screen, have the students click on the star icon

  6. Have students navigate through the game for 12-14 minutes

  7. Go back into the classroom once time is up

  8. While students are sitting at their desks create a “t-chart” on the board

  9. Ask students to raise their hand and say a set of opposite words.. How long can the list get?

  10. Hand out “Can You Find the Opposite?” worksheet for homework.

C. Closure:

Take the last ten minutes of the lesson to thoroughly explain the homework worksheet to the students. Use the first set of picture for an example. Take time to answer any question students may have.

D. Adaptations for Different Learners:

Implement a buddy system between students who are comfortable and are able to comprehend the material in class with a student who may be learning differently (i.e non-native speakers, struggling readers phobic learners, and those with poor study skills).

E. Homework

“Can You Find the Opposite?” worksheet. Match in the pictures with their opposite.
