Student Andrew Morin ’17 is quite the multi-tasker. In his first two years at Westfield State, he’s been involved in four shows produced by the Musical Theatre Guild, and he’s served as class president and as a member of the Student Government Association. The nursing major speaks about his love for the University, what keeps him motivated and how he balances activities and academia.
Why did you become involved in so many on-campus organizations?
I am truly a diverse person. I am a caretaker, a future nurse, but I am also a singer, actor, leader, programmer and writer. I think that nursing students, as well as other students who pursue more technical-based careers, are often criticized for being uncreative. I hate that stigma, and I think I am an example of how it is not always true.
Which organization do you most enjoy participating in?
Class Council. It is so great to have the ability to lead my class, and I have become so close to the other Class of 2017 officers. Part of our work is planning the Mr. Westfield pageant, which benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation; it’s easily the best part of the job .
What drew you to nursing as your field of study?
I attended Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlborough. While I always knew that I wanted to go into health care because of the job security and because I truly love helping other people, I never knew exactly what I wanted to do. After earning my nursing assistant certification and being mentored by my teachers in high school, I knew that nursing was the best fit for me.
Your hard work paid off, as you were awarded four different scholarships from the University. How did receiving these scholarships impact your education?
Coming into college as a nursing student, I knew that it would be challenging to live on campus, keep up with my academics and work. While I do still have to work to afford food, gas and occasionally a night out, the scholarships from Westfield State have allowed me to enjoy my college experience without worrying about money every week. I only have to take out very little money in loans, if any at all, in order to pay my bill each semester. So, in two and a half years when I (hopefully) have my degree and start paying off my student loans, I will have less to worry about and more time to focus on my career.
You’re at the halfway point of your college career. What has been the highlight so far?
The four musicals. Performing has been an incredibly fun and educational experience, and I have made some of the best friends of my life.
What are you most looking forward to in the next two years?
Granting more wishes, leading my class, doing four more incredible shows, studying with my nursing friends and earning my degree.
