WSU globe awash in color

The University’s Electrical Department has discovered a reusable way to wash the campus globe in bright color.

Over the years, the Electrical Department has been requested to change the color of the globe; the methods to light the globe have been tricky, usually consisting of temporary outlets and troublesome flood lamp holders.

This year, Allyn Hall, a member of the Electrical Department, reached out to the Sign Shop of Westfield to ask for a cost-effective, reusable method to wash the campus globe in color.

“My solution was to call the Sign Shop of Westfield and ask them if they could place a permanent purple vinyl film on a piece of plexiglass,” said Hall. “This would snap into our current L.E.D. fixtures and we would be able to reuse them each time we wanted to wash the campus globe a specific color.”

Currently, the globe is purple in honor of “Paint the Campus Purple Week,” for the April 3 Relay for Life event, which has been canceled. The event raises funds annually for the American Cancer Society.

The Electrical Department will order a variety of different colors from the Sign Shop of Westfield in order to wash the globe depending on the holiday or awareness event on campus.

In the past, they have washed the globe in Westfield State blue for some occasions or pink for breast cancer awareness. This year they will order red, white, and blue in celebration of the 4th of July and Presidents Day, along with red and white for the holidays.
