First-year Read

Part of the Westfield State Experience, the First-year Read is designed to encourage critical thinking, reading and writing among first-year students, and spark conversation with faculty across disciplines. This year’s book is Dream Land: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic by Sam Quinones.

The opening event of the First-year Read programming, “Mapping the Opioid Epidemic in Massachusetts,” will take place Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. in Wilson Hall, room 221.

Faculty members from the Geography, Planning, and Sustainability Department will conduct an interactive mapping workshop to explore the connections between the opioid epidemic and the underlying social-economic drivers in Massachusetts and across New England.
