Celebrating Douglass Day

Frederick Douglass

The University celebrated Douglass Day, commemorating the 201st birthday of Frederick Douglass, on February 14.

Douglass, an escaped slave, American abolitionist, orator, and social reform activist, was one of the most eminent human rights leaders of the 19th Century. He is celebrated annually around the country when documents from the “Freedom on the Move” website, a database of fugitives from North American slavery https://freedomonthemove.org, are transcribed.

Participants listened to a livestream of Douglass Day events at the University of Delaware, and enjoyed coffee and birthday cake. This was the second consecutive year that the University celebrated Douglass Day.
