Graphic Design Show – Nov. 19

Westfield State University will host a Graphic Design show in the Ely Campus Center’s Arno Maris Art Gallery from November 19 to December 7, featuring works from Mark Argetsinger, Nate Duval, and the Student Graphic Design Club.

Argetsinger, a praised book designer, won publication design competitions from the Association of University Presses, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, and the American Alliance of Museums. He’s the recipient of the Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design (1998).

He started in graphic arts as a letterpress printer assistant at a Trappist monastery, was hired as a book designer by A.A. Knopf, Princeton University Press, and then Meriden-Stinehour Press. Since 1990, he’s been a freelance book designer.

Argetsinger is also recognized for his poster designs, with notable works including one crafted for the exhibition of Sid Lapidus’s 50th Reunion of his class at Princeton University.

About his graphic design work, Argetsinger said, “The posters attempt to evoke the subject matter typographically… they often employ the specific types and styles of the era of their subjects—ranging from the sixteenth century to modern times.”

His book about designing books, A Grammar of Typography: Classical Book Design in the Digital Age, will be published this fall by David R. Godine.

Nate Duval is an illustrator, merch-maker, print-maker and designer.

Duval employs a focus on hand-made, often whimsical imagery and thoroughly thought out and rendered typography. His open-minded approach to illustration, design and branding has paved the way for his diverse client list.

He runs a full-service Design and Illustration studio in Longmeadow, MA, working through a wide variety of projects in both size and scope.

Gallery hours: Tuesday–Friday 10 a.m.–2 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
