Students lead Higher Ed/Higher Ground event – Feb. 25

The University will host a student-led event on Monday, February 25 at 6:45 p.m. in the Owls Nest, as part of the Higher Ed/Higher Ground speaker series.

The event, titled “The Center for Equity and Identity: Our Project and Goals,” will be presented by three Westfield State students: junior Kristin Brouillette of Agawam, sophomore Audrey Therriault of Haverhill, and junior Krystal Vazquez of Springfield.

“My partners and I are excited to present our project,” said Vazquez. “We hope that both faculty and students take something away from the panel, sparking discussion about diversity and inclusion on campus.”

The students will present their proposal for creating a space of inclusion and solidarity for marginalized students within the campus community. Associate Professor of English Catherine Savini, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor of English Shirley Lau Wong, Ph.D., will facilitate the conversation.

“We’re showcasing voices of students who want to make Westfield a more inclusive and equitable campus,” said Dr. Wong. “The three students will not only present their proposal to create a Center for Equity and Identity for Westfield but also reflect on their experiences throughout the project’s process.”

The event is open to students, faculty, and staff. Light refreshments will be available.

Since its establishment in 2016, the Higher Ed/Higher Ground speaker series aims to foster campus-wide discussions about racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and other forms of oppression through programs with an emphasis on social justice.
