Lesson Plan: Mammal Adaptations
Grade for Lesson: 2nd
Grade
Unit for Lesson: Mammals
Importance of the Lesson: It is important to be able to
identify animals, and the adaptations they use. Since humans
are mammals, it is important to understand what a mammal is,
and what animals fall under the mammal category.
Objectives:
- Students will be able to classify what
animals fall into the mammal category, and explain why
they do.
- Students will be able to understand
different forms of adaptations, and how they are used to
help specific animals.
- Students will be able to explain what
every mammal has/does to stay alive.
Instructional Technique: We will start as
a whole class to introduce the topic, then students will work
alone to work on the website quiz.
Procedure: Students will be introduced to the subject
of mammals as a whole class, through a power-point/series of
notes from the teacher. The teacher will go over the
adaptations that mammals use, what classifies an animal as a
mammal, and different habitats mammals live in. Students will
then work independently on the website quiz, and go through
the seven questions, where there are some other links to
websites that offer more information on mammals. Once they are
done, they will decide on a mammal they want to learn more
about for a possible future project.
Materials: Smart-board/projector for the
power-point/notes, and a computer for every child
Evaluation: A teacher will know the objectives are met
once the child is able to complete the full website quiz
correctly, it will also be important for the teacher to ask
questions to the class while doing the notes to see if the
students are grasping the information on mammals.
