Lesson Plan Outline

Unit topic/ Theme: U.S Geography

Grade: 5th

Lesson topic: 50 States

Objective/SWBAT: Students will able to identify a state given its location and shape. Students will also be able to create a brief presentation on the state they are assigned.

Instruction methods: Discussion, video, student presentation, computer work,and worksheets

Materials

  • Projector with speakers

  • Worksheet 1

  • Worksheet 2

  • Computer/ ipad for every student

  • Construction paper

  • Glue/scissors

  • Markers

Procedure

  1. Handout Worksheet (This is a blank map of the US). Inform the student that they will watch two short videos about all 50 states. Instruct students to identify the different states while watching the video. Play each video a few times allowing students to get all of the information. The video links are the following.

  2. After showing the videos, pull up a image of the United States and go over where all the states are. (walk around the class to make sure that the students have correctly filled out all of the states on the worksheet. When every student is finished move to the next step.

  3. Fill a hat with the all 50 states and have each student pick two states. Student will be researching the states capital, abbreviation, locations and a few fun facts about the state. Allow the student to use computers to research information on their states.

  4. Give the students two days of class time to finish the project.

  5. When the students are finished have them present their two states. Inform the student that they should pay attention and take notes about each state.

  6. When the presentations are done tell students to take a online test and fill out the worksheet that goes along with it.

  7. The homework will be to continue their research on the states they were assigned and finishing their presentations. If a student finishes these two tasks during class, there is no homework for them.
