Grade: Third

Lesson Topic: The Water Cycle

Lesson objectives: Students will be able to complete the Water Cycle quiz and understand the different steps of the water cycle.

Students will complete the attached handout and correctly define vocabulary provided in the quiz.

Instructional Techniques: Created Website Quiz, Lecture for Review, group discussion

Theoretical Perspective: The water cycle is the movement of the all the water on and in the earth. This movement is the reason behind many things in a student’s life, such as their drinking water and the weather around them. It is the base knowledge behind many other science concepts such as the weather and weather systems. It can also provide a real world example or concrete example of concepts like the transformation of liquid to gas and solid to gas.

Procedure:

A.) The lesson will start with an overview of the water cycle and its components.  The teacher will ask the students what they remember or know about the water cycle.  The teacher could then write the definitions on the board or just keep it a discussion. The teacher will go through each stage of the water cycle to make sure it is an even review.

B.) The teacher will explain the next task to the students. The students will go to the computer and complete the website quiz called “The Water Cycle Quiz”. Along with the quiz, students will be filling out a handout, which will be graded.  The teacher will hand out the handout to the students in order to go over it in depth.  The teacher will explain what is needed to be done to complete the handout; students will use the quiz to correctly define the words on the handout. The teacher will then ask students if they need any clarification about the handout or vocabulary words. The teacher will then remind the students that when they are finished, they must raise their hands and have the teacher look at the final page before they can hand in the work sheet. Students will then be allowed to go to the computers and start the quiz independently. The teacher will watch and answer any questions about the quiz as the students raise their hands.

C.) As the students raise their hands, the teacher will go around and check to make sure that the students have reached the final quiz page. The teacher will then collect a completed handout from the student. As the students finished, they may do independent work or reading as the other students finish.

D.) One adaptation would be the students to be able to work in pairs. This will allow for students to work with another to figure out the answers. The students could also type out the handout instead of writing it.

Evaluation

A.) In order to make sure that objective one is met; the teacher is doing an informal check of the students’ screens.  This will show that the students were able to complete the quiz. To check the understanding part, the students will be completing the handout that will be all the information on the quiz. For the second objective, the students will be working on a handout that asks the definition. All of the information is provided in the quiz and links in the quiz. The teacher will grade the handout as part of the quiz grade and the grade on that shows how much they understood the vocabulary.

B.) The one concern that I would have with teaching this lesson is making sure that the students have enough background information to complete the quiz correctly on the first or second try.
