A. Introductory
Activity
· The students will start
off on the rug.
· We will start the class
by signing the plant
song.
· I will ask the students
to tell me everything
they have learned these pasts few weeks about the life cycle of
the plant and
the parts of a plant.
· There will be an easel
with a big sticky note
paper that I will be writing their responses on.
· Some responses I may
get from the students are
the details about: the flower, leaf, stem, bud, roots, seeds,
nutrients,
photosynthesis, germination, pollination, seed dispersals,
stamens, sepals,
ovule, and fertilization process.
· I will then tell the
students that today’s
activity we will be making a science foldable plant with its
parts and their
jobs.
· I will tell the
students that after they create
their foldable project they will be taking it home to study for
the mini quiz
that we will be taking tomorrow (Friday) in class.
· The quiz will be about
the plant parts and their
life cycle.
B. Step-by-step
· The students will
return to their desks.
· There will be scissors,
colored pencils,
markers, and construction paper on their desks.
· I will give them step
by step instructions on
how to fold and cut their construction paper. (I will be
demonstration while
giving directions.)
· Instruction:
o
Fold
paper in half
(lengthwise) style.
o
Cut
makes are made every
2 ¾ inches. (But don’t cut it yet!)
o
Take
a ruler and mark 2
¾ inches with a pencil lightly. ( draw a line across the paper
so you can see
all four parts clearly)
o
Draw
a flower at the top
section (make it large enough to fill the space)
o
Next
section down, draw
a leaf, or two. Also draw a bud.
o
The
third section you
will draw a stem.
o
The
last section you
will draw the roots.
o
Next
you will color in
your drawing and label the parts.
o
Now
you can cut the
sections apart (ONLY the front page flaps; NOT the back (inside)
page flaps.
o
Inside
use the cute as a
guide.
o
Fill
out the information
we have learned about each of these plant parts: make sure to
include the jobs
of the plant.
o
We
will discuss this as
a class and I will write it on the whiteboard for the whole
class to see. (
therefore the correct information is written in their project to
study from)
o
The
students will write
what is on the whiteboard inside the correct folds.
· As a class we will all
fold the paper and
measure the individual folds together so it’s done correctly.
Then the students
can draw their flower on their own pace with my example hung on
the whiteboard.
· I will be walking
around the room for assistance
if needed.
· They will take their
projects home to study and
there will be a 40 minute quiz the following day.
C. Closure
· Once the students are
finished with their
project I will have them turn and talk about what they are going
to tell their
parent what they made in class today.
· I will ask two students
to demonstrate to the
class what they will say to their parents.
· One student will be the
parent and the other
will be the student (roleplay).
· A quiz will be taken
the following day on the
information.
D.
Adaptations for
different learners (i.e. non-native speakers, struggling readers
or math phobic
learners, students with poor study skills)
· Students who have
trouble reading may have their
test read to them.
E. Homework
Their
homework will be
to tell their parents about the project they made in class.
They
will need to study
with an adult for the quiz they will be taking tomorrow (Friday)
in class.
I
will inform the
students that even though they are bringing the projects home to
study; they
must bring back their project so I can grade them.
A. I will know if they
students meet their
objectives because I will take a mental note on who tells me
about what they
know about the life cycle of the plant and the parts of a plant.
I will also be
walking around the classroom and observe who is doing the
project to the best
of their ability. I will be collecting the projects they made in
class. Lastly,
they will be taking a quiz online in class based on what we
talked about and it
will be graded and accounted for in the grade book.
