- Lesson Topic or Theme:
Word Problems with The Wizard of Oz
- Lesson Objectives: The
students will be able to work through word problems involving various
types of math with familiar faces (The characters in Wizard of Oz).
- Instructional Technique:
There will be a discussion on how to work through and break down a word
problem. Group work will be given to go through multiple problems. An
internet game including The Wizard
of Oz will be given when the student’s work is done or at the end of
class.
- Instructional Materials: Paper and pencil, computer, whiteboard,
calculator
- Theoretical Perspective:
It is important that all students have the ability to see a math equation
written in different ways. This lesson will benefit the student in years
to come. Math will always be a dominant class all the way to the students’
college career. As the student gets older, the math will become more
difficult, so it’s beneficial to have a basis on the subject at an earlier
age.
- Procedure:
A. Introductory Activity: Students will
be given an introductory worksheet to see where each student stands on working
with word problems. After working on the word problems, the students will go
over the worksheet with the rest of the class.
B. Step-by-step:
B. Step-by-step:
- After the introductory activity, there will be a brief
lesson to go over any error the students had with the word problems.
- For an in-class assignment, students will break up in groups
of 5 or 6 and create one or two word problems on their own. The class will then
rotate from station to station with their group and answer the other groups’
word problems.
- There will be a quick overview of the questions to see how
many the group got correct. The group that gets the most correct will receive
one bonus point on their next quiz.
- After the group work, the students will go through the
interactive website about word problems with The Wizard of OZ. The student must
record all work done on the website on a piece of paper to hand in and be graded.
Once completed, the student can begin their homework.
C. Closure: Before class ends,
the student must complete an “exit slip”, reflecting on how they felt about the
lesson, if it was beneficial, or any concerns they have about the topic.
D. Adaptations for different
learners: Calculators are allowed to be used throughout the lesson.
E. Homework After class, the
students will be given a worksheet with more word problems to work on. CLICK HERE for a copy
of the worksheet.
Evaluation:
A. How/ when will you determine if
you have met your objectives?
We can determine if the lesson was a success by the worksheet from the
website, the group work, and the “exit slip” comments.
B. Concerns or questions you have
about teaching this lesson?
During the group work, there could be a concern about having equal work.
Some students could be doing more of the work than others. We will have to
track each student throughout the lesson to make sure that they truly
understand the concept.
