Unit Topic: Body Systems
Grade: 5
Lesson Topic: Skeletal System
Lesson Objectives:
- Given the links provided the students will be able to
create a presentation about their section of the body using
at least seven facts.
- Given the skeleton provided the student will be able to
correctly label the location of the bone with 100% accuracy.
Instructional Technique:
- Students will work in groups to complete the website.
Students will work in these same groups to gather their
information.
Instructional Materials:
- "The Skeletal System" website
- Paper
- Pencils/pens
- Large skeleton diagram
- Markers
Theoretical Perspective:
- It is important for students to learn about this so they
can understand how their bodies work. Also, what they learn
about the skeletal system connects to what they learn about
the other systems of the body.
Procedure:
A. Introduction
- Students have been learning about the different
systems of the body. Recently we have been focusing on the
skeletal system.
- For homework the night before, students had to read the
section of their textbook that discussed the bones in
the human body. The teacher will lead a discussion where the
students will discuss the parts of the reading that they
remembered most.
B. Step-by-Step
- The teacher will explain that they are going to
test the student's knowledge of the skeletal system by
completing an online activity.
- The students will be assigned into nine groups with
two or three students in each group.
- The teacher will explain that the website is in the form
of a multiple choice quiz that will test their knowledge on
different bones in the human body.
- In their assigned groups the students will complete the
website that we have created.
- Once all the groups have finished they will come together
as a class to discuss any new information they may have
learned from the website.
- The teacher will then assign each group a question from
the website to examine further.
- The teacher will explain that each group is going to go
back through the quiz again, which should be easier for them
the second time, until they reach their assigned question.
- Once they have answered the question correctly students
will use the link provided, as well as any other resources
they may need, to gather more information on the topic they
are assigned.
- The groups will have about 15 minutes to gather their
information and organize it in a way that they can present
it to the class.
- The students will complete the assignment.
- Once all the groups have gathered their information they
will come together as a class and all of the groups will
share what they have found with the rest of the class.
C. Closure
- The teacher will then hang up a large picture of a
skeleton with blank labels on the bones highlighted in the
website.
- The teacher will read off names of bones and call on
students to come up to the board and fill in the blank
spaces.
- This will continue until all of the labels are filled.
- The teacher will then pin the skeleton to the bulletin
board for all to see.
D. Adaptation:
- Allow for questions during all parts of the assignment and
answer all questions that are asked.
- If someone in the group has difficulty reading the other
person in their group can be asked to read the questions out
loud.
- Allow extra time to complete any part of the assignment if
needed.
- Working in groups can help those who have trouble focusing
or comprehending the information on their own.
Evaluation:
Given the links provided the students will be able to create a
presentation about their section of the body using at least
seven facts.
- This objective is met by having the students research and
present the information they find about their assigned
section of the bones. After 15 minutes of work time as well
as the links they are given they should be able to find and
present at least seven facts about their topic.
Given the skeleton provided the student will be able to
correctly label the location of the bone with 100% accuracy.
- This objective will be met during the closure of this
lesson. The students will be observed as they label the
skeleton with the name of the bone. The teacher will observe
whether they are correct or if they are incorrect and this
will inform how she will proceed with the material.
