Theodore Roosevelt

In 1904 Roosevelt wanted to win the presidency in his own right. Having gained the presidency through McKinley's death.
He had to work with Republican Party leaders and also gained the support of capitalists who didn't want the Democrats to win the election.
Theodore won in a landslide and become the first president to win after the previous president had been assassinated.
He vowed not to run again as President in 1908, which he would later regret.
As president he set up the Square Deal which reformed the American workplace, initiated welfare legislation and put government regulations on industry.
Roosevelt was also the first environment president as he set aside 200 million acres as nation forests, reserves and wildlife refugees.
