Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln's greated legislature that passed was the Emancipation Proclaimation which freed all slaves in the Confederate States.
It didn't free slaves in the Union but it identified the Union as fighting for freedom and to end slavery.
Lincoln also urged black men to join the Union side of the war.
Over two hundred thousand black men joined the Union army and Lincoln thanked them saying they would have lost without them.
