The site of Cleopatra's Palace was submerged by earthquakes and tidal waves more than 1,600 years ago.
Cleopatra's
Palace was discovered by a team of marine archaeologists led by
Frenchman Frank Goddio while the team had been conducting excavations
on the submerged island of Antirhodus. This was the place where
Cleopatra was said to have built her palace. Among the ruins of her
palace included a well-preserved shipwreck, red granite columns with
Greek inscriptions, and two statues: the priest of the goddess Isis and
a sphinx said to represent King Ptolemy XII!
