Procedure:
Introductory Activity:
This brief, introductory activity will incorporate a sing-along of the fifty states. The teacher will start the lesson plan off by using this song to specify what they are learning for the day/week/month.
He or she will play it once just to listen. The second time the teacher will hand out lyrics and sing the song with the class.
Step-by-step:
Next, the teacher will open up the map quiz game on the front classroom screen.
The teacher will demonstrate how the game works by providing an example of themselves finding a state.
Afterwards, they will call out for volunteers to point out where a state is located. All of this is done as a full classroom activity to begin.
Following that, the teacher will have the students open up their chromebooks to practice learning the states locations based on what the game is asking for them to do.
As the students go through the steps of the game, they will write down each state they are asked to locate, and what their response was below it.
This way, they can keep track of what states they located correctly and incorrectly.
In doing this, students will demonstrate the answers they get correct or incorrect, and it will be honest.
They won’t rush through the game and guess in order to be done with the work faster, providing more reliability on their knowledge.
The teacher will collect this sheet of paper and use it to gather more intel on what states students are comfortable identifying, and which ones they still need practice locating.
The teacher may notice a trend in which states students know very well, and which states students still struggle remembering location wise, which can make for a more consistent review session.
Closure:
A culminating activity…
In addition to the handout that the teacher is collecting in regards to the map game, students will also fill out a worksheet (found online, but printed out for them) to represent what they have learned. This can be done individually or in partnerships.
This worksheet can be done after the map game, or it can be done the next day to see what the students have remembered. If there needs to be extensive review, this worksheet should be done several days later.
Once completed, the teacher will collect this worksheet to help gather more information about student understanding.
A following review session will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of student understanding, and ultimately summarize material for all students.
Evaluation:
Previously Stated Objectives:
students will be able to identify all or most of the fifty states in the USA
students will conclude what states they know and what states they are still learning and strategies for learning these other states will be conducted.
How to document successful completion…
Based on the correct/incorrect responses during the map game, the teacher will be able to understand which states students are familiar/unfamiliar with locating beforehand.
After this data is collected, and more review is done, the teacher will be able to determine if their objectives are met through their students' work on the closing activity worksheet.
In hopes of more students being able to correctly identify the fifty states, then the teacher will be able to fully determine if the objectives listed have been met to their fullest potential.
If not, more review will be needed in order to help students accurately locate all of the fifty states on a United States map.
