Unit Topic or Theme: Science
Grade: 3
Lesson Objectives: The student will be able to match the animal with
their appropriate habitat. The student will also be able to
match the correct vegetation to it’s given habitat. The students
will also be able to match the correct type of precipitation to
the habitat as well.
Instructional Technique: Lecture, demonstration, group work, individual
work, computer work, discussion
Instructional Materials: Laptop, step-by-step outline sheet, worksheet
(Switcheroozoo), pencils and website
http://www.switcheroozoo.com/games/habitat.swf
Theoretical Perspective: By learning different types of habitat students
will be able to understand the difference in environments, this
will allow for them to recognize why certain animals live in
certain places. By learning this students can understand that
their environment is not the same as other organisms.
Procedure:
A. Teacher
will explain what a habitat is to the students and give verbal
examples.
B. Teacher
will hand out guide sheet for using the website. Teacher will
then instruct the student to go to the website. Students will do
so. The students should be limited to the one page and then are
to follow the guided sheet. After this the students will be
given a worksheet that goes along with the activity. They will
then be instructed to work alone on the website until the
worksheet is completed. They should go through each individual
animal and record the correct results (getting the compatibility
meter to 100%) as they find them. Once the first part of the
assignment is finished the teacher will then instruct them to
get a partner and fill in the empty last column (the students
will pick an animal and then define it’s likely environment).
C. The
teacher will call the students together. The teacher will allow
children to share their animal they had chosen to the class and
tell them it’s environment. Once in partners students can make
fault environments for each other to test and see if they can be
made correct. Afterwards the students can then correct the
faulty environment and this can be used as an evaluation. The
teacher will then collect the worksheets from the students to
review their progress.
D. For
learners that are developmentally delayed, they can draw the
answers in the boxes rather than writing them.
E. No
homework assignment
Evaluation:
A. The
teacher will be able to determine if the students have met the
objective by evaluating their worksheet. Once the student fills
in the blank column the teacher will be able to review if the
students grasp being able to match the animal with their
habitat, matching the correct vegetation to the habitat, and
also if they matched the correct types of precipitation.
B. One concern we have for this lesson is the
students understanding that precipitation can change and it
isn’t always a constant type in one area. Another concern is
knowing how many ideal environments work for one organism (the
combinations may be too broad).

Step
One: Sign into computers and open the web
Browser
(Safari)
Step
Two: Type link into the url box http://www.switcheroozoo.com/games/habitat.swf
Step
Three: Read over the worksheet and directions at the top
Step
Four: Click through the website for five minutes to get to know
how to use it (Use the arrows around each category to switch the
animal, vegetation, place, and precipitation)
Step
Five: Make the compatibility meter 100% for each animal! Make
sure to record your answers!
Step
Six: Draw in your own animal, put its likely place, vegetation,
and precipitation
Step
Seven: Raise your hand when you are done so that I can collect
your papers
Step
Eight: Share Time!
Step
Nine: Find a partner. Make a goofy environment for an animal and
see if your partner can fix it!
