Theoretical Perspective:
This information is important for the students to know
because it teaches them how to construct a sentence. Students need
to know how to properly place verbs and nouns in a sentence.
Students also need to be able to define a verb as well as a noun.
Obtaining this knowledge will also help them when speaking.
Procedure:
The teacher will hand out white-boards to every
student. The teacher will hand out magnets with words on them. The
teacher will hand out the non-technology worksheet. Students will
then use the magnets to create sentences containing verbs and
nouns. The students will record their sentences by writing them on
the worksheet. The student will circle the nouns in each sentence
and put a square around the verbs.
After the students complete the non-technology
worksheet, the teacher will hand out the online worksheet. The
students will then go on a computer. The first step they will do
is go to the website. http://www.abcya.com/nouns_and_verbs.htm
. Once every student is on the website, they will click the
button that says verbs and nouns. After they click that a sentence
will pop-up. The student will write down the sentence on the
worksheet. They will circle the nouns and square the verbs on
their paper. After they have done that, the student will click on
the words they thought were nouns and the words they thought were
verbs. The website will tell the student if they are correct or
not. If the student is not correct, they have to rewrite the
sentence on the second line with corrections. When they have
completed the worksheet, students will raise their hand and the
teacher will collect their worksheet. Students will then put their
computers away. After they have put their computers away they will
sit down on the rug in a circle. We will then have a wrap up
discussion.
Once all the children are seated, we will discuss the
activities they completed. The teacher will ask the students their
thoughts on the activities. The teacher will ask questions such as
“Were the activities difficult?” “Were the activities too easy?”
“Did you learn anything new?” “Did you enjoy the activities?” Once
the questions have been answered the teacher will write down the
definition of a noun and a verb on a big piece of paper. The
students will help the teacher with the definition of a noun and a
verb. The teacher will then hang the paper up in the room so the
children will have a reference.
There could be troubles for students who have a
hard time reading. In order to help these students, we have
provided adaptations so they can have an easier time grasping this
lesson. The teacher or teacher assistant will sit down and read
the sentences out loud to the student. This way, the student can
hear the noun in the sentence and hear the verb being used. The
students will be able to identify the noun and verb easier since
they will be told that the noun is the person, place or thing in
the sentence and the verb is the action that is in the sentence.
It will be easier for these students to make a mental picture of
what is going on in the sentence so they can then find the noun
and the verb.
For homework, the students will be given a worksheet with a
word bank with nouns and verbs. The students then have to
construct sentences with the words. The students will have to
circle the nouns and square the verbs. It will be very similar to
what we did in class, however this can be used for practice and as
a way for the teachers to get a better idea for where each child
stands on this lesson.
Evaluation:
Objectives:
- At first, we will see how each child defines
a noun and a verb on his or her own. Then we will discuss what a
noun and a verb is in class and hand out the online worksheet. On
the worksheet will be definitions of a noun and
a verb. Once they begin to work on the online worksheet they will
have to circle the noun and verbs which should show if they
understand what the meaning of a noun
and a verb is.
Students will be able to identify verbs and nouns
in a sentence
-In the non-technology based activity which we
will hand out first, the students will be expected to come up with
sentences on their own. In these sentences they are then expected
to circle what
they consider
is a noun and put a square around what they consider is a verb.
After being told what a noun and a verb is, we will hand out the
online worksheet, and the students are expected to
copy down the sentence given to
them and circle what they know is a noun and put a square around
what they know is a verb. By comparing these two worksheets, you
will be able to tell if the
student is
successfully grasping what a noun and a verb is in a sentence.
