Lesson Topic or Theme:
· The Underground Railroad
Lesson Objectives:
· The student will be able to understand the
life of a slave on a plantation.
· The students will learn how
African-American’s escaped and who helped them.
· The students will understand
African-Americans still faced discrimination in the North.
Instructional Technique:
· Group work will involve 2-3 students.
Students will hand in one quiz per group.
Instructional Materials:
· Instructions for website and quiz are
given to the student on each handout.
Theoretical Perspective:
· Students need to learn so they understand
the history of our Nation and why Black History month is important.
Procedure:
A. Introductory Activity: Teacher will ask questions to
students to see what they know about black history month. “What
month is it?” “Why is it relevant to what we are learning?” “What do
you know about Black history?”
B. Step-by-step: Step One: Introduction to Black
History. Ask Students questions on what they know about Black
History Month.
Step Two: Introduce the website and give students a brief example of
how the website works.
Step Three: Assign groups and give handout/quiz to students
Step Four: Walk around classroom to see if students have questions
during quiz/handout
C. Closure: Small discussion on what
students liked, didn’t like, and what they thought was interesting.
D. Adaptations for different learners: Each slide has a
section to listen to the text, for those students who aren’t able to
read well off a computer or learn better when they are read too.
E. Homework: None
Evaluation:
· Handout Quiz on Interactive website about
The Underground Railroad
· Discuss answers to quiz as a group and
class discussion on what students learned.
· Students are graded on participation, not
on the answers from the quiz.

· The student will be able to understand the

website students will learn about how they lived, what kind of work
they had to do, where they lived, and what they grew.
· The students will learn how slaves escaped
and who helped them.
· By reading through the slides, students
will learn key points on how slaves managed to escape.
· The students will understand
African-Americans Still faced discrimination in the North.
