Lesson Plan Example
  • Unit Topic or Theme: Morning Meeting - Weather

  • Grade: Second Grade (Severe Special Needs)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

  • Lesson Topic or Theme: Weather - What Should We Wear Today?

  • Lesson Objectives: The student will be able to identify what the weather is currently (4 out of 4 questions on weather worksheet are correct and the same answers are chosen on the website, including the appropriate clothing option).

  • Instructional Technique: Discussion, One-On-One Aid( if needed)

  • Instructional Materials: ipad/computer with the weather website setup, handouts (weather worksheet, flat stanley), smartboard, calendar

  • Theoretical Perspective: Students need to understand how to dress appropriately for certain types of weather for their own well being (life skills).

  • Procedure:

A. Introductory Activity : Teacher will set up MeMoves on the smartboard and as a class the students can choose the activity to wake up and warm up for the day’s activities. Every student, if able to or to the extent they are able to, will participate. After the activity is finished, the teacher will stand by the classroom calendar, call on a student by name, and ask questions one at a time (such as: What day of week is it? What is the complete date today? What season is it?). Students will come up to the calendar when called on and point to the “answer” and verbally answer to the best of their ability.

B. The teacher will hand out the ipads/students will go to their classroom computer with the weather website ready for them to use (It will be bookmarked for easier and quicker access). The teacher will also pass out the
weather worksheet when every student is ready. Students will complete the worksheet by circling their answers while also choosing those answers on the website and anything else the website asks for (sun, clouds, rain, snow, wind, clothing, etc.). When the students have completed the assignment, the teacher will check their website and collect their worksheet. When all the students are complete, the teacher will also complete the website activity on the smartboard with the class. This is when the whole class can discuss the weather and the teacher can point out any common mistakes (without directly naming the students if possible) and any of the students’ questions can be answered. When the discussion is over, the teacher will hand out the flat Stanley worksheet to each student and instruct them write their name where it says “name” and to color in “Stanley” so that he is ready for the day based on the weather. The students can get up to gather any supplies they need (markers, colored pencils, or crayons) and then return to their seats to complete the work. When they are done(or class time is over), the students are to hand in the worksheet to the teacher.

C. Teacher will pass out flat stanley handout and instruct students to color it in with the clothes that are appropriate for the day’s weather. When they are finished or class time ends, students will turn in the worksheet for evaluation

D. Student’s one-on-one aids will be available to help; the teacher will also be available for extra help.

  • Evaluation:

    1. How/ when will you determine if you have met your objectives?

The student will be able to identify what the weather is currently: Weather Worksheet will be collected for evaluation. The Student should have 3 out of 3 of the questions correct. If there is one or more wrong answered, student will have a few minutes of one-on-one time to discuss why or how something is wrong and how they can improve for next time.

The student will be able to choose appropriate clothing: Flat Stanley Worksheet will be collected for evaluation. Students should have chosen appropriate clothing based on the weather and the class discussion.

    1. Concerns or questions you have about teaching this lesson?

Regarding the closing activity, students will be at their own pace for coloring the flat Stanley worksheet and may need a lot of time to color is as they want to. Another concern is students’ motor skills and their ability to color a clear representation of the clothing.
