THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE: The lesson is important because students must be able to count in order to build on math. Students will also have the opportunity to be able to work on their writing because writing is used in everyday life. Students will learn about animals they could find in the forest. For example, when they go camping or exploring the forest. Students will have the opportunity to work on their creative skills by drawing and coloring.

INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE:

  1. Introduction of the topic/focusing activity with Connections to Prior Knowledge: The teacher will ask students to think of animals that they have seen in the forest or woods. Student will then turn and talk to a partner about the animals that they have seen.
  2. Development:

·      Students will turn on computers. The teacher will have opened the website on each computer. http://sheppardsoftware.com/preschool/animals/forest/animalforestgame.htm

·      Students will begin with the Animal Forest Game. Students will play this game while using worksheet #1.

o   Students will be asked a series of questions about the animals that they are learning about.

o   After correctly identifying the animal that matches the description in the question, students will circle the answer.

o   Students will hand in the worksheet before moving on to the next activity.

o   The teacher will help them move to the next activity of the computer as the students finish.

·      After completing the Animal Forest Game, students will move onto the Forest Find and Count. The students will be given a second worksheet that they will complete as they interact with this activity.

o   The teacher will assist the student to get to the next website. http://sheppardsoftware.com/preschool/animals/forest/animalforestgame.htm

o   The website will ask the students to count on how many of the given animals is on the page. Students will count the number of animals and write their guess on the first line.

o   Students will then click the animals to find the correct number of animals on the page. Students will write this number on the second line under correct answer column.

o   Students will hand in the worksheet at the end of the activity.

·      Students will end the lesson by using worksheet #3. This will combine both counting and identifying the animals. Students will be asked to draw a bear, two raccoons, three frogs, four fish, and five birds. Students may work add color and details to the worksheet while waiting for the other students to finish.

  1. Closure: Students will come back to the rug. The teacher will ask the students to think of their favorite animal. Students will turn and talk about their favorite animal with a partner. The teacher will ask a few students to volunteer what their favorite animal is from the activity.
  2. Adaptations for Different Learners: The teacher will provide flashcards with the pictures of the animals and its name for students who are ELLs or struggling readers. The teacher will provide counting manipulates for students who need help with math. The website also provide text-to-speech for students who may not be able to read the sentences on the webpage.
  3. Homework: Students will have a worksheet to complete at home. Students will be asked to look at the animal and its name. Students will write the name of the animal in the box in their best handwriting.

EVALUATION:

Students will be able to accurately count up to six animals within a diagram.

·      The teacher will be able to tell that the student can count up to six from worksheet #2. The teacher will look at the students’ guess and look at the correct answer. If the student correctly guesses the correct answer, the teacher will see that the student can count to six.

Students will be able to correctly match the name of the animal to the picture.

·      The teacher will know that the students are able to identify the name of the animal to the picture by the students completing the game. If the students are not able to name the animal to the picture, they will not be able to complete the activities. The teacher will observe this during the lesson.

Students will be able to copy the animals’ names in their best handwriting.

·      The teacher will check the students from the homework. The teacher will check to make sure the student has spelt the animal name correctly and it must be readable. Teacher will give students feedback if the student has difficulties writing letters.

Students will be able to identify animals based on descriptions.

·      The teacher will be able to tell that the student can identify the animal based upon the description from worksheet #1. Students will circle the answer for the question. The teacher will know that the student can identify the animals if the students get three out of five of these correct.

Students will be able to draw the correct number of animals given on the worksheet.

·      The teacher will determine if the students met this objective when looking at worksheet #3. The teacher will check to make sure that there is the correct number of each animal on the worksheet. The teacher will not judge on the students’ drawings but instead just the number of each animal on the page.
