Unit Theme: Telling Time
Grade Level: Second
Lesson Topic: Telling time by the half hour
Lesson Objectives:
·
Students should be able
to recall the time by the half hour when given a time on the
standard clock.
·
Students should be able
to use technology to implement what they have learned about
the standard clock and the half hour.
Instructional Technique:
This is
independent work on a computer, using the interactive website
provided. Instructor will provide assistance to students that
need it but worksheets will be provided to guide students
independently.
Instructional Material:
Students will use
the website http://www.e-learningforkids.org/math/lesson/treasure-island-time/ along with the
handout that has the instructions and the work that will
be turned in.
Theoretical
Perspective:
Students
need to learn the standard hand clock in order to
understand how many people keep track of time and to also
know what time it is if that clock is the only form of
telling time where they are. The half hour is an important
landmark for students to relate to when learning how to
express more complex times so the half hour mark should be
taught thoroughly in its own lesson.
Procedure:
A.
Instructional Activity:
As a class, the instructor will teach the fundamentals of the
clock using a labeled clock in the classroom. The instructor
will then show the students the half hour and test different
times as a class. Once the instructor feels comfortable for
the class to move forward, they can start the lesson.
B.
1. Students will go on
to the website using the website link on the handout.
2. When students are at
the website, they should shut the monitors off to let the
instructor know that they are ready to continue.
3. Students then click on
the “what time?” box, which is the first box on the top row
with two stars on it.
4. Students will then
start practicing telling time, making their way through the
levels at their own pace.
5. As students are using
the interactive website, they should match what they have done
on the screen to the clocks on the worksheet.
C.
Not Applicable
D.
Because students go at
their own pace, the website is adaptive to all levels.
Students that have English as their second language could have
a modified worksheet so they can understand directions.
Special Needs could have icons on their worksheet in order to
follow the guidance easier.
E.
Homework would be an
additional worksheet, with bonus on the bottom where they have
to draw the clock to match the time given.
Evaluation:
·
Students will be able
to recall the time by the half hour when given the standard
clock. This will
be determined when they pass in the worksheets. As they are
using the website, the worksheet is recording if they
understand the material.
·
Students will be able
to use technology to implement what they have learned about
the standard clock to the half hour. At the bottom of the
worksheet, they will have to record what level they got to.
This doesn’t mean that a person on level two didn’t know how
to use it; it just means that they needed more time. The
record is to compare in the class. If most of the class
reaches a certain level and one student is behind, they did
not meet the objective. Each class will be different but a
class comparison helps understand what needs to be retaught.
