Unit Topic: Parts of Speech

Grade: 5th

_______________________________________________________________________

- Lesson Topic: Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives

- Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to distinguish whether particular words are nouns, verbs, or adjectives. The students will be able to see the correlation of how the amount of wrongs and rights on  the activity affected their overall performance.

- Instructional Technique: It is a computer game played individually.

- Instructional Materials: http://www.abcya.com/parts_of_speech.htm

- Theoretical Perspective: This information is important for students to learn because they will have a better knowledge of language. Not only English but the building blocks of every language.

- Procedure:

A. Introductory Activity:

Teacher will review with the class the definitions of a verb, a noun, and an adjective.

B. Step-By-Step Procedure:

1.     Go onto the Internet: Google Chrome

2.     The game you are looking for is called “Word Invasion” and you will find it under space where you write in the web address.

3.     Press PLAY

4.     Read each page of instructions. When you are done, press NEXT.

5.     When you come to the OPTIONS page, on the left side, make sure only the nouns, verbs, and adjectives have a check mark next to them (ALL of them will have a check mark next to them when you first get to this page, make sure to press pronouns, adverbs, and prepositions to uncheck them).

6.     On the right side of the OPTIONS page

7.     Press START

8.     Then press CLICK TO PLAY

9.     After each level, stop and fill out the results from each level. Including the word, the correct answer and the student’s answer.

10.  There are six levels; students should do their best to finish all.

C. Closure:

Once the student’s finish all six levels, they will press on “Details” on the bottom and see how they did based on the graphs shown. They will then print these graphs.

D. Adaptations

When the student comes to the OPTIONS page of the game, it allows you to choose the speed of the game. Instead of playing the game at normal speed, change it to SLOW. Also, on this same OPTIONS page, these students can choose only two of the three parts of speech. For example, they can include just verbs and nouns in the game instead of all three.

E. Homework

Students will take the worksheet they completed in class home and highlight the words that they got wrong. Also they will write one sentence that states how the two lines (one line representing the amount of “correct answers” and the other line representing the amount of “wrong answers”) on the graph influence each other.

- Evaluation:

Objective 1: The student will be able to distinguish whether particular words are nouns, verbs, or adjectives.

·      The worksheet that will be given to the students will show the teacher which words they got wrong and what their wrong answer was. It will also show the teacher what they got right. Therefore the teacher can see who understands the lesson and who doesn’t.

Objective 2: The students will be able to see the correlation of how the amount of wrongs and rights on the activity affected their overall performance.

·      The student’s homework that asks them to write one sentence about the graphs will show the teacher whether they understand the correlation between the two.
