Lesson Objective: With the teacher using prompting
and support,kindergarten
students will be asked to answer key details regarding a text that
has been read aloud to them. The goal is to have 50% of the class
be able to demonstrate this with accuracy.
Instructional Technique: Teacher will have students engage
in discussions on background knowledge prior to the book, have
students discuss events/answer questions when the book is being
read aloud, and have students answer and discuss questions after
the book is read aloud.
Instructional Materials Needed: The Very Hungry
Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Theoretical Perspective: Students will learn about the
stages of a caterpillar evolving into a butterfly. Students will
practice applying background knowledge as well as practice using
knowledge gained from listening to the story to answer questions. Procedure:
a)Introduction of the
topic/focusing activity with Connections to Prior Knowledge:

anyone ever seen a caterpillar before? If so, where? What did the
caterpillar look like?

anyone know what makes caterpillars so special?

anyone ever seen a butterfly before? If so, where? What did the
butterfly look like?

will gather on the rug for story time

teacher will introduce the subject of caterpillars and butterflies
to students
oThe
teacher will read aloud The
Very Hungry Caterpillar to students
oThe
teacher will stop periodically throughout the story to discuss
with students the significant events occurring in the story.
c)Closure:
oThe
teacher will prompt the students with questions regarding The Very Hungry Caterpillar
oThe
teacher will ask students to share any input they have on the
story
Adaptions for Different
Learners: Students can engage in discussion through giving
thumbs up/thumbs down when asked questions Homework: Draw a picture of a butterfly, and share it with
the class the following day Evaluation:
The student will be able to apply knowledge from the reading
and answer questions about key details regarding the text.
Successful completion for this objective will be through
students answers to questions. Students may express their
answers verbally as well as use thumbs up/thumbs down . The
teacher may document the students that participate in a
notebook.
