Grade Level: 2nd grade

Lesson Topic or Theme: Counting money

Lesson Objectives:

·         Students will be able to sort coins.

·         Students will be able to make various amounts using coins and dollars.

·         Students will be able to match pictures of the coins to the correct amount.

Instructional Technique: Group work and individual work.

Instructional Materials: Coins including pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. A matching worksheet, homework worksheet and computer instructions paper. Computer for every student.

Theoretical Perspective: Teaching this lesson on counting money is important for the students in the real world outside of the classroom. It not only teaches the value of money but also how to work together to complete a task and how to complete a task individually. The activity encourages mathematical skills for students at every level.

Procedure:

(A Introductory activity) Students will sit on the circle rug and read the coin poem together. Next they will separate into groups of three or four at the tables in the classroom.

(B Descriptive outline)

1. Students will begin the lesson by working in their group to organize coins. The teacher will hand out containers of mixed coins and they will have to organize them into certain spots on the table marked with amounts.

2. Once all the students finish organizing the coins the class will line up to go to walk to the library. Each student will get on a computer and go to the website ABCYA.com.

3. First they will click on grade 2 then click on numbers. They will scroll down and click on the game “learning coins”. The teacher will direct the students to first work on the section “learn” where they will review facts about each coin.

4. After the read through all of the facts they will begin to sort the coins (similar to what they did in class). If the students’ progress past sorting they will move onto counting.
