• Lesson Topic or Theme:
Learning short a
sounds (an,at)
• Lesson Objectives:
The student will be able to recognize the short a sound in high
frequency words. Students will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one
letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or
many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant. Students
will be able to read a short story using words with that have
the short a sound.
• Instructional Technique:
Independent work using interactive website.
• Instructional Materials:
Interactive Website (Starfall.com), follow up matching activity.
• Theoretical Perspective:
It is important for students to learn the short a sound because it is
one of the building blocks of the English language. The short a
sound is found in many common words. Students will practice
understanding and hearing the vowels properly. By learning this
concept they will also improve spelling, reading, speech, and
comprehension.
• Procedure:
A. Step-by-step
1. Teacher will have a document open
with links to activities.
2. Students will click on link 1 and
complete the first activity (an).
3. Students will click on link 2 and
complete the second activity (at).
4. Students will click on link 3 and
listen/interact/read aloud the interactive book on the website
(Zac the Rat).
5. Students will complete a matching
activity.
B. Closure: Students will read
book (Zac the Rat) aloud to the teacher using a printed copy of
the book provided by the teacher upon completion of the 3
previous activities.
C. Adaptations for different
learners: For non-native speakers or struggling readers we will
adapt the lesson by having them listen to the story Zac the Rat
several times to pick up on the sound of the short a. The teacher will
work with these students on the pronunciation of the short a sound instead of
having them do the other activities and reading the book aloud.
D. Homework: Practice reading the
printed copy of Zac the Rat.
• Evaluation:
A.
We
will determine if the students have met our objectives by having
them read the book Zac the Rat to us. If they are able to read
it without mistakes then we will be able to determine that they
were able to complete the activities successfully and understand
the short a sound.
B. Concerns or questions: One concern that we have is
that students will have a difficult time completing this lesson
due to their possible lack of simple computer knowledge.
