Unit topic: Counting

Grade: 2

Lesson Objective: The students will be able to identify different coins and their values.

Instructional Technique: lecture, demonstration, independent online activities, with an evaluation on what they learned.

Instructional Materials: You will need a quarter, nickel, dime, and penny, computer for every student, smart board for demonstration, and handouts for each student.

Theoretical Perspective: Students need to learn how to count money, and understand the value of currency.
 

Procedure:

Introduction activity:

• We will teach the students the values of the coins (ie. Quarter=. 25 dime=. 10 nickel=. 05 penny=. 01) Pass around coins as well to show students what coins look like.

• Then send students to the pirate website, listed under their bookmarks/favorites, and see how they practice adding up the values of the coins. http://smartygames.com/igre/money/treasureHunt.html

• After ten minutes of practicing adding up coins have the students write the highest level they reached.

• Give the students a hand out and have them assess the values of coins by giving them different coin totals and see how they add up coins in two different ways for the values.

Evaluation:

We can see if we met the criteria by seeing how the students did on the evaluation handout with having at least a 75% correct on the handout.
