Today's Lesson Plan

Unit Topic or Theme: Clocks • Grade: 2 *****************

Lesson Topic or Theme: Telling time, scheduling, and elapsed time

Lesson Objectives: 1: The student will be able to correctly express time on analog clock. B: They will also be able to correctly calculate elapsed time based on a schedule made in class.

Instructional Technique: group work, demonstration, computer time, and homework.

Instructional Materials: copies of handouts, homemade clock, interactive website:

Theoretical Perspective: It is necessary for students to have a basic knowledge of the concept of time because it is a skill used every day. This will help students become more organized by planning out their day and understanding the difference between AM and PM.

Procedure: A. Introductory Activity: Teacher will lead demonstration of recreating time on an analog clock. The teacher will use a homemade version of an analog clock to help students visualize the hands on the clock moving to represent the passing of time.

B. Step-by-step: Students will pair off and work together on interactive website (“Telling Time II”) practicing basic skills of reading time to the nearest half hour/hour. This can be found by following the link above and clicking “second grade” then under the “Time” category choose the

second link. Once students earn their second sticker (stickers can be earned by getting five correct answers in a row) they can continue to work online using the elapsed time game and scheduling game, both are also listed under the “Time” category. After online activities, teacher will explain how to make a schedule that represents key aspects of their own day. Students will then work individually to make a schedule using handout provided. This schedule will also be needed for the homework assignment.

C. Have a wrap up discussion where students can share their schedules with the class. The students can talk about important skills they learned in class and how they can be applied in every day life.

D. For students who have a difficulty visualizing time, they can use the homemade clock as a hands-on approach to demonstrate time as the minutes or hours are passing. This may help them understand elapsed time

in a more visual way.

E. Homework: A short practice worksheet to reinforce online activity topics. This will include four questions about telling time on a clock and questions about elapsed time.

Evaluation: Objective 1: Will be met by correctly completing homework assignment that reinforces basic skills of reading and expressing (drawing hands on blank clocks) time.

Objective 2: Evaluated based on the tables created in class and the questions related to elapsed time on the homework assignment.
