Unit Theme: Anatomy
Grade Level: 1st grade
Lesson Theme: Body Parts (external)
Objectives:
Students will be able to identify were basic body parts are.
Students will be able to write about a body part (three sentences).
Instructional Techniques:
Short lecture
Individual work
Working on computer
Administering a test
Instructional Materials:
Handout of person that has body parts labels but you have to label them
Handout of a box to draw in with three lines to write facts
https://www.learninggamesforkids.com/health_games/body_parts/labeling.html
Colored pencils or crayons
Theoretical Perspective:
Students need to know the basic body parts so they can be self aware. If you’re hurt or something doesn’t feel well you can tell someone, and they will know what you’re talking about. This way you can also follow instructions like, “kick the ball with your foot” and, “wash your hands”.
Procedure:
Introduction: going in front of the class and asking if they know their body parts
Step by step : 65 min session broken up into 2 days
5 min
Give the kids the handout with the blank box and three lines on it.
Explain to them they will be choosing a body part and write 3 facts about that body part and they will have to draw a picture of that body part.
25 min
The kids will then break off individually and work on writing their 3 facts and drawing the pictures of their chosen body part.
20 min
The kids will go on the computer and go onto https://www.learninggamesforkids.com/health_games/body_parts/labeling.html and practice dragging the body part labels to the correct body parts up to level two. Once they reach that level they will call me over and I will bring them back to the first level.
15
After the 20 min are up they will go back to their desks and I will give the second handout which is the body that has body part labels that you have to label in order to test if the website taught them where the body parts are.
Closure
Students will hand in their worksheet to close the work on this unit.
Adaptations for Different Learners
This allows struggling readers to learn visually rather than just reading about body parts.
Non native English speakers will be able to learn where body parts are and the names for them in English along with English speaking students. For the writing portion however they could demonstrate their facts to the teacher physically.
Evaluation:
Students will be able to identify where basic body parts are.
They will label body parts on a body diagram and submit it to be graded.
Students will be able to write about a body part and draw a picture of that body part.
They will write out 3 facts they know about the body part they chose to show they know more about the body part than just where it is.
One concern I have is that I will be too simple of an assignment for the students since you learn body parts early. By adding in the written component I hope it will increase the difficulty of the assignment just enough so they still learn but it isn’t boring.
