Math Lesson

Unit Topic: Math

Grade: First Grade

Lesson Topic: Counting Coins

Lesson Objectives:

  • Students will be able to tell the difference between dollars, quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies.

  • Students will be able to identify which number represents a quarter, nickel, dime and penny.

  • Students will be able to add and subtract coins.

Instructional Technique:

Demonstration, Online Assessment, Group Work

Instructional Materials:

Theoretical Perspective:

It is important for the students to learn the values of coins because money is something they will use in their everyday lives. They need to learn how to count money because when they purchase items they have to give the right amount of money, or if they work in retail, people are going to want to be given the correct amount of change in return. Money is in people's everyday lives, therefore they must learn to use it correctly.

Procedure:

  1. The teacher will begin by introducing this to the students and telling them that they will learn about coins and money today.

  2. The teacher will go onto the website that students will be working on and go through the learn portion of the site with the class.

  3. The teacher will then handout the web based worksheet and explain to them what they are doing. While the teacher is explaining to students exactly what she wants them to do, they should have the website shown up on the board so the students know what it is going to look like.

  4. The teacher should then give the students their computers and let them log onto the website. The teacher should let the students play around on the website and fill out the web based worksheet while observing the students.

  5. Once the students fill out the web based worksheet, they should be given the non technology based worksheet as a closing activity, that way they can make sure they got the main points of the website and know their coins now. Students will work in groups to complete the assignment.

  6. Adaptation for slower students, they can take the non-technology based worksheet home for homework if they did not understand it in class.

Evaluation:

I know that the students will be able to tell the difference between dollars, quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies because of the worksheet they will fill out while working on the website and observing them throughout class. In order for students to calculate the correct answers to the non-technology based worksheet, they will have to identify which coins represent the values. Therefore, I know that students will be able to identify which numbers represents a quarter, nickel, dime, and a penny. Students will be able to add and subtract coins which will be proven from the non technology based worksheet after we go through the values of the coins.
