Unit Topic: United States Geography

Grade Level: 4th Grade

Objectives:

-        The students will be able to locate all 50 states on a map of the United States of America

-        The students will be able to identify key facts on all 50 states

Instructional Technique:

-        Individual work for the work sheet but the lesson plan closes in a whole group discussion

Instructional Materials:

-        Website

-        Handout

-        Map

-        Flyswatters

Theoretical Perspective:

-        This is important because students need to develop background knowledge on the States that make America united and it lays down a foundation for their future education in history courses.

Step by Step Instruction

-        Go to the website:

-        Click on the section labeled United States 

-        Start at the tutorial section on States and learn about the location of the State AND what the Capitals of each state are.

-        Write down the State name AND Capital Name on the provided lines on the worksheet

-        Record 2 facts about the state and write it down on the lines that say “fact 1 and Fact 2” on the worksheet.

-        Draw a picture of the state and label where the Capital of the state is

-        Start studying their location and practice with beginner and move to the harder versions as you complete the lower levels.

Adaptations:

-        Students with learning disabilities will have an aid to help them navigate the website and record information on their worksheet

Closure:

-        Wrap-up: A map of the United States will be presented on the overhead.

-        The students will be split into 2 teams.

-        Each team receives a flyswatter.

-        One person from each team will come up to the board and slap the state on the board that is said aloud to the class.

-        First person to slap the state has to say the capital of the state

-        If they are incorrect the other team has a chance to get a point if they know the capital of said state

-        Team with the most points at the end of the game wins

Evaluation:

-        The students will be able to locate all 50 states on a map of the United States of America

o   This objective will be complete through the closure activity

-        The students will be able to identify key facts on all 50 states

o   This objective will be complete through the worksheet
