Lesson Plan
Unit/Topic: Math 1st grade
Lesson topic/theme: Greater than, less than, equal to with two digit numbers
Lesson objectives: The students will demonstrate comparing two numbers using the greater than less than and equal to symbols. Students will demonstrate what they learned at the end of class during the closure.
Plan Outline
Instructional Technique: Lecture, discussion and debate.
Instructional Materials: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/earlymath/BPGreatLessEqualWords2.htm
Handout during website that students will complete.
Theoretical Rationalism: This is important to learn because this will help the students every day in life. This will help with money concepts to distinguish what has more value. This is also important because it helps with the very basics of math by knowing what has greater value number wise.
Step by step Procedure: The teacher will begin class by writing on the white board three definitions. The first definition would be greater than means a number is larger than another, the second definition written would be less than means it is smaller than the other number, and the final definition the teacher will write is equal to means two numbers are the same. Next the teacher will write out 8<10 (less than), 17>11 (greater than)and 94=94 (equal to) on the board. The teacher will then ask the students to raise their hand if they agree with these equations. For the equations the students agreed with, the teacher will ask for one volunteer to write on the white board why they agree. For the ones the students did not agree with the teacher would ask another student to come up and write on the white board why they did not agree with the equation. After this lesson the students will open the computers and go to the http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/earlymath/BPGreatLessEqualWords2.htm website. Once the students are on this website they will complete a set of 10 rounds. Whicher rounds they got wrong they will write it down on the handout labeled “formal evaluation” and try that same problem again.
Closure: The teacher will have students gather around the rug after completing the 10 rounds on the website. The teacher will then go around and ask each student to provide an example of greater than, less than, or equal to using two two digit numbers that they believe is true to show what they learned.
Adaptations for different learners: For students who have learning disabilities the teacher will use 1<2 (less than), 5>3(greater than), 7=7(equal to) when writing the definitions on the board at the start of class. The teacher will then ask them to write if they agree with the equations the same way the other students did.
Homework: Students will complete the greater than, less than and equal to homework assignment to be passed in on Monday.
Evaluation: I will determine if my lesson was a success or a failure the Monday after I look at their homework. If the majority of the students show that they understand the material and have given correct answer this lesson will have been a success. If most of the students fail the homework this shows that they do not understand the material and that I have to change how I am teaching them and teach more in depth.
Objectives:The students will demonstrate comparing two digit numbers using the greater than less than and equal to symbols. To measure how successful this lesson will be determined by how well the students complete the homework. Students will demonstrate what they learned at the end of class during the closure. This will measure how well they have obtained the information that was taught during class.
