The reason why it is important for
students to learn about the food groups, and portion control
is because childhood obesity is a huge problem in today’s
society and is continuing to rise. Children also need to
learn about the positive effects it has on their body when
they eat 3 balanced meals each day. This will promote a
healthy lifestyle if they know the correct amounts to be
eating for each meal.
Procedure:
We will begin this unit by
assigning each student to a partner. Then we will pass out
the food group’s game worksheet, which each pair will work
on together. Along with the worksheet they will be playing
“The Food Group’s Game” and will record their results as
they play. They will take turns being the writer and one
playing the game. If you are playing the game, then your
partner is writing your results, then you switch rolls.
After each partner has a turn of playing the game, I will
instruct the students to put their computers away and we
will come together as a class. I will lecture in the front
of the classroom. I will discuss with the kids what makes up
a balanced meal. We will discuss what we think is
appropriate to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the
correct portions they should be having for each meal. We
will discuss how eating balanced meals with reduce
overeating. After the lecture, I will pass out the “My
Plate” worksheet. Students will be instructed that on their
own, they will have to create their own balanced meal. They
will write on the plate, in the corresponding categories,
what food they are going to eat for their balanced meal.
They can choose whether they want to create a meal on their
plate for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They are only creating
one meal. I will then collect both “The Food Group’s Game”
worksheet and the “My Plate” worksheet when they are done.
Evaluation:
The students will be able to
accurately categorize the foods items for each individual
food group. To make sure the students met the
requirement for the above objective, I will be assessing
them based on the correctness of the worksheet they
completed. (Food groups game worksheet) I will check to make
sure that the student placed the right food in the correct
food group category.
Students will be able to identify a
balanced meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner based on the
guidelines discussed in class. To make sure the students met
the requirement for the above objective, I will be
collecting their “My Plate” worksheet they completed. I will
check each category on their plate to make sure that each
sections portion does come out to a balanced meal.
