Theoretical
Perspective:
This
information is important for students to learn
because it can be an introduction to many other
ideas such as gravity, electric currents and
magnetic force fields and the poles on Earth.
They will learn that there are forces on Earth
that cannot be seen and they can learn this
through magnets which move objects without
touching them.
Procedure:
First
the teacher will introduce the lesson by asking
the students what they know about magnets. Allow
sufficient time for answers. The teacher will
then provide students with the definition of a
magnet; “a material or object that produces a
magnetic field. The magnetic field causes a
force that pulls on other magnetic materials and
attracts or repels other magnets.” Then the
teacher will handout the instructional worksheet
that explains how students should get to the
interactive website. The teacher will read the
directions on the worksheet aloud to the entire
class and then instruct the students to begin
the activity. Teacher will walk around the room
and make sure the students have successfully
arrived at the correct website and that they are
following the directions. Allow the students
sufficient time to complete the entire
worksheet. Then the teacher will have the
students pass in the instructional worksheet
before they begin the hands-on activity.
The
teacher will separate the students into 4 groups
to complete the hands-on magnet activity and
give each student a chart worksheet. The teacher
will place 4 objects and a magnet at each
station and instruct students to take turns
trying to determine if the objects are magnetic
or not. The students will then record their
answers on the chart provided by the teacher.
Allow students 5-7 minutes at each station and
then tell them to rotate to the next station
(clockwise). After students complete all 4
stations the teacher will then instruct them to
go back to their assigned seats.
Closure:
The
teacher will review the chart worksheet with the
class and ask students if the specific material
was magnetic or not. The teacher will ask how
the students figured out which objects were
magnetic and which objects were not. By having
the students
share their answers, the teacher will be
able to determine what the students learned
about magnets through the activities.
Adaptations
for Different Learners:
The
teacher will read the directions for the
interactive worksheet out loud, as well as hand
out the written copy in order to benefit
different learners. If needed, the students can
work with a partner for the interactive computer
activity. Students will also be able to work in
groups at the 4 stations for the hands on
activity.
Homework:
None.
Evaluation:
The
students will be able to recognize all aspects
of a magnet. The teacher will be able to
determine if this objective was met by reviewing
the student’s fill in the blank section on the
worksheet for the interactive website.
The
students will be able to demonstrate how a
magnet works. The teacher will be able to
determine if this objective was met by visually
observing the students in the hands on activity
at their stations.
Students
will be able to correctly identify four objects
that are magnetic, not including a magnet. The
teacher will be able to determine if the
student’s learned this objective through both
the hands on activity and the second activity on
the back of the worksheet for the interactive
website.
Questions
or Concerns:
The
internet will not be working for the interactive
website activity.
The
students behavior might not be appropriate
when working with some of the materials (nail,
scissors, staples, glass) in the hands on
activity.
