Goals: Chapter 6.1 Light, Photons Energies, and Atomic Spectra
- Calculate wavelengths from frequencies and vice versa for light
- Determine the energy of a photon
- Know which end of the electromagnetic spectrum is the low energy end and which is the high energy end
- Describe how line spectra support the idea that the energy of an electron is confined to specific levels for a given atom
Chapter 6.2 The Hydrogen Atom
- Describe how Bohr constructed his model of the H atom
- Understand that quantum mechanics works by treating the electron as a wave
- Describe the trade off between kinetic energy of an electron as it gets closer to the nucleus and the potential energy of an electron as it gets closer to a nucleus
Goals: Chapter 6.3 Quantum Numbers
- Be able to recognize allowed and allowed combinations of quantum numbers
- Compare Bohr's idea about quantum numbers to the quantum numbers produced by quantum mechanics
- Be able to determine orbital type from a set of quantum numbers
Goals: Chapter 6.4 Atomic Orbitals; Shapes and Sizes
- Recognize orbital type (s, p, d, f) from graphic representations
- Sketch s, p, and d orbitals
- Compare orbitals that have identical l values but different n values (Compare orbitals from different rows of the periodic table)
