Chap 3: Simple Bonding Theory
Goals: 3.1
Lewis Electron-Dot Diagrams
- Draw Lewis structures
- Using concepts of formal charge, electronegativity, and the octet rule, predict the relative energies of a selection of resonance structures
- Draw resonance hybrids
Goals: 3.2
Valance Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory
- Describe the basis for VSEPR theory
- Determine the shapes of molecules through molecules with a steric number of 6
- Using concepts like relative strength of lone pair-lone pair, bonding pair-lone pair, and bonding pair-bonding pair repulsion, the extra repulsion caused by multiple bonds, the reduced electron pair repulsion experienced by the bonding pairs of highly electronegative atoms explain why molecules have a certain geometry
- Describe the basis for the ligand close packing model
- Predict the polarity of molecules: describe the factors that go into such a prediction, and describe when and why we may have difficulties predicting the polarity of some molecules
